The Complete Macerating Toilet Maintenance Schedule (Printable Checklist)

Keep your macerating toilet running for 15+ years with this simple maintenance schedule. Covers weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual maintenance tasks.

Why Maintenance Matters

A well-maintained macerating toilet can last 15 years or more. A neglected one? You might be looking at major repairs within 3-5 years. The good news: maintenance is simple, quick, and inexpensive.

The two biggest enemies of macerating toilets are limescale and bleach. Regular descaling prevents limescale damage, and using the right cleaning products prevents bleach damage to the membrane. That's 90% of maintenance right there.

The Complete Maintenance Schedule

Weekly Tasks (2 minutes)

  • Flush with hot water — After normal use, run a flush of hot (not boiling) water through the system. This helps dissolve grease and prevent buildup.
  • Quick visual check — Glance at the base of the unit for any signs of water leakage.
  • Flush unused units — If the toilet isn't used regularly, flush it at least once a week to maintain the water trap seal and prevent seals from drying out.

Monthly Tasks (10 minutes)

  • Clean the toilet bowl — Use a macerator-safe cleaner (enzyme-based or mild soap). Never use bleach.
  • Listen during flush — Pay attention to the motor sound. Changes in pitch, grinding sounds, or unusual vibration can indicate developing issues.
  • Check connections — Quickly inspect visible pipe connections for any signs of moisture or dripping.

Quarterly Tasks — Hard Water Areas (30 minutes)

Semi-Annual Tasks — Soft Water Areas

  • Descale the system — This is the single most important maintenance task.
1. Flush the toilet to empty the bowl 2. Turn off the water supply 3. Pour the recommended descaler into the bowl 4. Allow to sit for the time specified (usually 1-2 hours) 5. Restore water supply and flush 3-4 times
  • Inspect the non-return (check) valve — Remove and clean if accessible. Look for limescale buildup or debris.

Annual Tasks (1-2 hours)

  • Open the unit for visual inspection — Unplug, remove the cover, and inspect:
- Blade condition (look for dulling or damage) - Membrane condition (look for cracks, stiffness, or discolouration) - Microswitch condition (look for corrosion or waste contamination) - Seals and gaskets (look for wear, cracking, or brittleness) - Motor seal area (look for moisture)
  • Check the discharge pipe — Look for signs of leaks, frost damage (in cold areas), or sagging.
  • Test the check valve — Ensure it opens and closes freely.
  • Verify electrical connections — Check that the plug and outlet are in good condition.

Proactive Replacement Schedule

PartReplace EveryApproximate Cost (CAD)Why
Membrane3 – 5 years$47 – $54Rubber degrades over time; failure causes microswitch damage
Microswitch3 – 5 years (with membrane)~$45Replace with membrane to prevent cascading failure
Horseshoe clipWith every membrane change~$22Becomes brittle; may break if reused
Check valve5 – 7 years or as neededVariesInternal flap wears; limescale reduces sealing
Motor seal7 – 10 years~$62+Wear from vibration and age

The Quick Reference Card

DO:
