How to Unclog a Macerating Toilet (Without Damaging It)

A clogged macerating toilet requires a different approach than a standard toilet. Never use a plunger or chemical drain cleaner. Here's the right way to clear a blockage.

Important: A Macerating Toilet Is NOT a Standard Toilet

Before you reach for the plunger, stop. A macerating toilet requires a completely different approach to unclogging than a conventional toilet. Using the wrong method can cause expensive damage.

NEVER do these things to a clogged macerating toilet:

  • ❌ Use a plunger (can damage the macerator seal and force waste into the motor area)
  • ❌ Pour chemical drain cleaner down the bowl (damages seals, gaskets, and the membrane)
  • ❌ Use a drain snake or auger through the toilet (can damage the macerating blade)
  • ❌ Force multiple flushes hoping it clears (can overflow or stress the motor)

Step 1: Identify the Type of Blockage

There are two different types of blockage, and each requires a different fix:

Blockage INSIDE the Macerator Unit

Symptoms: Water rises in the toilet bowl when you flush. The macerator motor may activate but nothing drains, OR the motor doesn't activate at all.

Common cause: A foreign object (wet wipe, sanitary product, excessive paper) is jamming the blade.

Blockage in the Discharge Pipe

Symptoms: The macerator motor runs and sounds normal, but water is slow to drain or backs up.

Common cause: Limescale buildup, a blocked check valve, or a frozen discharge pipe (in cold climates).

Step 2: Safe Unclogging Methods

For a Blade Jam (Object Inside the Unit)

  1. Unplug the macerator from the electrical outlet
  2. Turn off the water supply to the toilet
  3. Remove the macerator cover (typically 4-6 screws)
  4. Visually inspect the blade area for foreign objects
  5. Remove the obstruction by hand (wear rubber gloves!)
  6. Check the blade — make sure it spins freely by hand
  7. Reassemble the unit, restore power, and test

For a Discharge Pipe Blockage

  1. Check the discharge pipe route for any obvious kinks, frost, or disconnections
  2. Inspect the non-return (check) valve — limescale or debris often collects here
  3. Clean the check valve by removing it and flushing with warm water
  4. If limescale is suspected, run a descaling treatment through the system

For General Slow Drainage

If the toilet flushes but slowly, it's likely a limescale buildup issue:

  1. Run a descaling treatment — Pour the recommended descaler into the bowl, let it sit for 1-2 hours, then flush
  2. Repeat if necessary — Severe limescale may require 2-3 treatments
  3. Check the vent — A blocked vent pipe causes slow drainage and gurgling sounds

Prevention: How to Avoid Future Clogs

The best way to deal with a clogged macerating toilet is to prevent it from happening:

Only Flush These Items

  • ✅ Human waste
  • ✅ Regular toilet paper (reasonable amounts)

Never Flush These Items

  • ❌ Wet wipes (even "flushable" ones — they're NOT safe for macerators)
  • ❌ Sanitary products (pads, tampons)
  • ❌ Paper towels or tissues
  • ❌ Dental floss
  • ❌ Hair
  • ❌ Cotton balls or swabs
  • ❌ Food waste
  • ❌ Grease or cooking oil
  • ❌ Cat litter

Regular Maintenance

  • Descale every 3-6 months to prevent limescale buildup on the blade and pump
  • Use macerator-safe cleaners only — never bleach
  • Run a flush of hot water weekly to help clear any buildup

When to Call a Professional

Contact a macerating toilet specialist if:

  • The blade is damaged or doesn't spin freely after removing the obstruction
  • The motor makes a humming sound but the blade doesn't turn (could be a capacitor issue)
  • You can't locate the blockage
  • Water is leaking from the base of the unit
  • The electrical breaker trips when you plug in the unit
